Fantasy Creatures

This is cute.http://whispersss.deviantart.com/ Beautiful artwork. Don't know how the artist persuaded the bird to sit so still??

The Prophecy of the Kings Trilogy. Dragons, demons, sorcerers and wizards battle in this epic fantasy.

Fantasy Dreams - Castles

I like that this one is poking from the trees. Somewhere in Germany I think.

Fantasy - Dwarf Jokes

What has an IQ of 12
13 dwarves.
Don't you mean 12 dwarves?
No - there's bound to be one thick one.

Two dwarves in a field and one says -"Look at that dead crow!"
The other dwarf looks in the sky and says "Where?"

What do you call a field full of dwarves - a thicket.

If you know any more - help me out. I admit i adapted some of these.

Brilliant News

Very excited.

Potential for a new Dad's Army film. I've been watching the series on Saturdays with my son. It's amazing how well the characters and humour stand up. It will be a great tribute if they get the right actors. Bill Nighy - yes. Toby Jones - Not sure.

Sci Fi by the Sea - Herne Bay June 15th

This promises to be fun. www.baypromoteam.ticketsource.co.uk

Quite a few Stars coming to this - all Sci Fi related of course.

War of the Fae - A Call to Arms #2.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The tale continues to improve. Jayne discovered she has elemental talents and has made friends with a pixie called Tim. Tim is a great character and brings in some light humour. There is a dark side to the novel as the Dark Fae are starting to exert their dominance. A very good tale and quite unique. Recommended

Best Fantasy Villain

I think Joe Abercrombie's Glokta has to be one of the best characters ever.

What or who is your favourite fantasy villain?

What Attracted me to Fantasy

I like the unknown and I remember talking with friends in a caravan when I was about 7. We scared each other with tales of ghosts and goblins and being so young we were quite naive. At that age we had a real sense of wonder about the unknown and of course just about everything was unknown. Fantasy recaptures that feeling. unfortunately our world is too well known in many respects so escaping to another - feeds our imagination. I love that.

I also like the excitement of a well told tale. The page-turning fever that accompanies a good story. Wanting to reach the conclusion, gripped by epic battles and cliff-hanger moments. Again, great stuff.

So in conclusion - the unknown and excitement attracted me to fantasy. Strangely I don't quite get that from Sci Fi. Anyone else? I do like historical fiction but that is very similar to fantasy in many respects. Sometimes even magic is involved (Merlin tales, and some Saxon/Viking tales).

War of the Fae #1 - Elle Cassey

The Changelings (War of the Fae, #1)The Changelings by Elle Casey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was free on Kindle and a great read, so well worth trying it out. It's a modern day fantasy set in the US and the character building is very well done. The tale quite quickly becomes fantasy and what a surprise. It's not akin to other novels and is full of surprises. There's vampires and werewolves, but each is unique and with a twist. Well worth reading and it's free!!

The Way of Shadows - Brent Weeks.

The Way of Shadows (Night Angel, #1)The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this and would recommend it. Reminds me of the game - assassin's creed. Characterisation is good and the tale is very brutal at times. Very gritty and lots of character detail. The thieves are very believable characters and very well developed.

Kylar is brought up in the gutters and dreams of finding a way out. His path crosses that of one of the top assassins and, crazy as it seems, he is smitten with the idea of becoming one.

Good plot with plenty of suspense. As a warning though, Brent Weeks has lots of imagination but reading his books can at times be a challenge. I read a few paragraphs and was left wondering what I'd just read.

Dear Mr Garage Owner

Please stop charging what you would like us to afford.

Charging £550 to fix brake pipes is exorbitant when the next garage charged £100. We public are gullible, but are not growing money nor are we placed on the earth to keep you in the lifestyle you would wish for. Please charge a fair price!! Many thanks

Fantasy Creatures - Dragons

Artist - Phil McDonnall.

Nice artwork, Phil.

Theft of Swords - Michael Sullivan

Theft of Swords (The Riyria Revelations, #1-2)Theft of Swords by Michael J. Sullivan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is two tales in one book. the first tale was excellent but I struggled with the next, until it took off that is. When all the characters come together the tale improves leaps and bounds and the ending is unexpected. Sullivan is a very good author and his books are full of fresh ideas. Well worth reading.

Short Story - Blood of the Dragon

Michael Sullivan's - The Rose and the Thorn

The Rose and the Thorn (The Riyria Chronicles, #2)The Rose and the Thorn by Michael J. Sullivan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another good book. Not as good as book 1 but still very enjoyable. The tale develops Hadrian and Royce further. The latter is a great character and quite spooky. I liked the addition of the Viscount and especially his introduction to the tale. Not a great deal of fantasy and the tale could easily be set in medieval times. Some good side plots that intertwine to develop into a very promising story. Very enjoyable

Short Fantasy Story - Terror Unleashed

Amazing 3D Pavement Fantasy Art

This is brilliant.

The Crown Tower, by Michael J Sullivan, a review

The Crown Tower (The Riyria Chronicles #1)The Crown Tower by Michael J. Sullivan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

One of the best fantasy books I've read for a while. The tale is a little mixed; it starts very well, it's slow in pace, but you get the sense that it has considerable merit and, as you read, that proves true. There's a good climax at the end of the book.

The mix of characters is its main strength, two opposing characters deliberately brought together to forge them both into better people. If they don't kill each other first, then this might just work. There's only a smattering of fantasy creatures in this first instalment, but there is a greater sense of more to come and the tale is sufficiently different to wet your appetite.

I enjoyed this tale and will want to read more of Sullivan's works.

Fantasy Humour

Baldric in Fighting Pose

This is me before the battle of Hastings re-enactment 2012. I looked worse for wear after the battle. Very wet and slippery battlefield.

Fantasy Dreams - Castles

This one is for Anne. It's a bit more about Rochester Castle. There were two sieges:

"In 1215, garrisoned by rebel barons, the castle endured an epic siege by King John. Having first undermined the outer wall, John used the fat of 40 pigs to fire a mine under the keep, bringing its southern corner crashing down. Even then the defenders held on, until they were eventually starved out after resisting for two months."

"The royal court frequently visited the castle in the mid-13th century, but during a further siege in 1264, by Earl Simon de Montfort and barons rebelling against the king, the king’s hall and other bailey buildings were burned. The rebels captured the bailey but were unable to take the keep, and were eventually driven off by royal reinforcements. Soon after, however, the garrison was forced to surrender after a royal army was defeated in battle at Lewes."

Me - Medieval Fighting (somewhere)

I'm on here somewhere. It was a very wet weekend but good fun nonetheless. I'm on the Saxon line. the video is from behind the Normans (boo hiss). Not sure it's medieval - more dark ages - or at least the end of that period.
